PE CE Data: Combined Futures and Options Bias

The futures market and the options market each tell you something about direction, and they are strongest when they agree. Stolo's PE CE Data puts both in one time-bucketed table: futures price and OI on one side, total call and put OI on the other, with a buildup label and an overall bullish or bearish trend for each bucket.

The problem it solves

Reading futures OI and options OI on separate pages means you cross-check them in your head, bucket by bucket. PE CE Data does the cross-check for you and lands on a single trend read per interval, so you can scan the session for the buckets where the futures and the options were pushing the same way.

What the table shows

Per time bucket:

  • FUT Price, FUT Price Chg
  • FUT OI, FUT OI Chg, FUT Volume, FUT Volume Chg
  • PCR
  • CE OI Total, CE OI Total Chg
  • PE OI Total, PE OI Total Chg
  • PE minus CE OI Chg, and the same as a percentage
  • Buildup label and an overall Trend: Bullish or Bearish

Key terms explained

TermWhat it means
FUT OI ChgChange in futures open interest for the bucket.
CE OI Total / PE OI TotalAggregate call and put open interest across the selected strike band.
PE minus CE OI ChgPut OI change minus call OI change. Positive is bullish positioning, negative is bearish.
PCRPut OI divided by call OI.
BuildupThe futures price and OI combination: long buildup, short buildup, unwinding, covering.
TrendStolo's combined bullish or bearish read for the bucket.

A worked example

NIFTY, expiry day, bucket size 15 minutes.

  • 10:00 to 10:15: FUT price up, FUT OI up (long buildup), PE minus CE OI change strongly positive, PCR rising. Trend: Bullish. Both markets agree.
  • 12:30 to 12:45: FUT price still up slightly, but FUT OI now falling (short covering) and CE OI change turning positive. PE minus CE OI change flips negative. Trend: Bearish. The futures move is now just covering while call writers step in.

The read: the genuine bullish leg was the morning, backed by long buildup and put writing. By early afternoon the fuel was short covering into fresh call writing, a classic sign the up move is done. A trader books longs around the 12:30 bucket rather than holding into the fade.

How to use it in Stolo

PE CE data in Stolo
  1. Open Analysis, then Futures, then PE CE Data.
  2. Choose the instrument and expiry.
  3. Set the call and put strike bands and the bucket size.
  4. Read down the Trend column to find the buckets where futures and options agreed.
  5. For any bucket of interest, check the raw FUT OI Chg and PE minus CE OI Chg to see what drove the label.
  6. Load a past date to study how the combined bias built into a previous expiry.
tip

The most reliable signals are runs of two or three consecutive buckets with the same trend label. A single bucket can be noise; a sustained run is a real lean.

How traders use it

  • Bias confirmation. Enter only when the futures and options both point the same way for a run of buckets.
  • Exhaustion spotting. A trend that flips from buildup-driven to covering-driven is a sign the move is near done.
  • Expiry-day read. Watch PE minus CE OI change into the afternoon to anticipate the close.
  • Divergence flags. A bucket where futures and options conflict is where a turn often starts.

Live mode and history mode

Live mode fills the table bucket by bucket through the session. History mode rebuilds it for a past date, which is the cleanest way to study how the combined bias developed on a given expiry or event day.

Frequently asked questions

What is PE CE Data in Stolo?
PE CE Data is a time-bucketed table that puts the futures picture and the options picture side by side: futures price and price change, futures OI and OI change, futures volume, the put-call ratio, total call OI and its change, total put OI and its change, the difference between put and call OI change, a buildup label and an overall bullish or bearish trend for each bucket.
How does PE CE Data decide the trend?
It combines the futures buildup with the options positioning. Futures long buildup plus put OI building faster than call OI reads bullish. Futures short buildup plus call OI building faster than put OI reads bearish. When the futures and options signals conflict, the trend label reflects the stronger of the two and the bucket is worth a closer look.
What does the PE minus CE OI change column mean?
It is the change in total put OI minus the change in total call OI for that bucket. A positive number means put writing is outpacing call writing, which is bullish positioning. A negative number means call writing is winning, which is bearish. The percentage version scales it against the total so buckets are comparable.
How is this different from the PCR OI trend chart?
The PCR chart plots one ratio over the day. PE CE Data is a fuller table that shows the raw call and put OI, the futures OI and price, volume and a derived trend, all per time bucket. Use the PCR chart for a quick sentiment line and PE CE Data when you want the underlying numbers and the futures context together.
Can I choose which strikes feed the call and put totals?
Yes. There are call and put strike selectors, so you can set the band of strikes that the CE OI Total and PE OI Total columns aggregate. A wider band gives a market-wide read; a narrower band focuses on the strikes around the money.
Can I change the bucket size?
Yes. The interval control sets the time bucket. Smaller buckets show fine detail around a specific event; larger buckets give a cleaner session overview.
Does PE CE Data work on stocks?
Yes, on any F&O instrument. It is most informative on the liquid index contracts where each bucket has enough futures and options activity to read.
Can I load PE CE Data for a past day?
Yes. Pick a past date and Stolo rebuilds the table for that session, which is the best way to study how the combined futures and options bias developed into a past expiry.
Should I trade on the trend column alone?
No. Treat it as a summary that points you to the buckets worth examining. Confirm with the raw OI and price columns, the futures chart and your own method before acting. It is a filter, not a trigger.
Which plan includes PE CE Data?
It is part of Stolo's paid analysis access and can be tried on the Trial plan, which starts at 499 rupees. See the subscription plans page for the current tiers.
