Why Most Option Chains Leave You Half-Blind

Standard option chains give you plenty of data. What they don't give you is the right data, laid out the right way, fast enough to actually act on.

An option chain lists every available call and put for an underlying, and the four numbers that matter most aren't just price and volume.

Open Interest (OI)

OI is the count of outstanding contracts at a strike that haven't been closed or expired. Heavy OI at a strike shows a lot of participants have placed bets there, often acting as a floor (heavy Put OI) or a ceiling (heavy Call OI). The change in OI tells you whether fresh positions are forming or old ones are closing out.

Put-Call Ratio (PCR)

PCR is total Put OI divided by total Call OI across every strike. Above 1 usually points to a bullish lean, since writers are comfortable selling puts; below 0.7 tends to signal bearish sentiment. Implied Volatility (IV)

IV is the market's expectation for future movement, priced into the premium of every option. High IV means expensive options, good for sellers, riskier for buyers. Max Pain

Check PCR for Directional Bias

Start with the Put-Call Ratio at the top of the chain. Above 1 leans bullish from the writers' side; below 0.7 leans bearish. This is your first filter, telling you which direction has market positioning behind it before you even look at an individual strike.

Find the strike carrying the highest Call OI and the one carrying the highest Put OI. These act as the market's implied ceiling and floor for the current expiry, the levels where the most writers have sold options and where price tends to meet its strongest resistance or support near expiry.

An option chain is a table listing every available call and put for an underlying, Nifty, BankNifty, or an F&O stock, across all strikes and expiries. For each strike it shows the current premium, Open Interest, volume, Implied Volatility, Greeks, and a few derived metrics on top. It matters because it shows where market participants, especially the large institutional ones, have actually placed their bets, which strikes are functioning as implied support and resistance, and where sentiment sits across the whole options market.

Heavy Call OI at a strike means a lot of call options have been written there, which usually means sellers expect price to stay below it and will defend that level. That's your implied resistance. Heavy Put OI works the same way on the downside, implied support. When OI at one strike stands out sharply against its neighbours, that's a strong conviction level among writers. Keep an eye on the change in OI too, not just the absolute number: rising OI means fresh positions, falling OI means unwinding.

Volume is contracts traded in the current session, and it resets to zero every day. Open Interest is the running total of contracts still outstanding, not yet closed, exercised, or expired, and it carries over across sessions. Volume tells you how busy a strike is today; OI tells you how much exposure has built up there over time. Both climbing together at a strike confirms genuine fresh positioning. High volume with falling OI usually just means unwinding, not new interest.

Three signals together give you a real read. First, PCR: a high reading suggests bullish sentiment from writers. Second, compare where Call OI is concentrated against where Put OI is concentrated, the range between the two highest-OI strikes is your implied range for the expiry. Third, watch for shifts in build-up, if Put OI is rising sharply closer to the current price while Call OI holds steady, that's put writers defending a lower level. All three together beat price action alone for a directional read.

Checking IV before entering matters especially for sellers, who want to sell when IV is elevated and the premium is richer.
