Expired Contract Data

In short

Historical price, volume, and open-interest records for futures and options contracts after their expiry, preserved for analysis and strategy testing.

Updated Aug 11, 2026

Once a futures or options contract reaches its expiry date, it stops trading and is removed from the live NSE contract list, but the price, volume, and open interest history it generated during its life does not disappear. Expired Contract Data refers to this archived record: every tick, every strike’s premium movement, and every session’s open interest build-up for a contract that has already settled, whether cash-settled index options or physically or cash-settled stock derivatives.

This data matters because active option chains only show the current or near-month contracts, while a trader researching how a stock or index typically behaves around a specific event, a results season, a budget day, or a monthly expiry, needs to look back at contracts that expired months or years ago. NSE itself publishes this historical record in its daily Bhav Copy files, which is the primary official source most platforms and traders rely on to reconstruct expired contract history.

Expired contract data is the raw material for backtesting options strategies over multiple expiry cycles, since a strategy tested only on live, current-month data has no track record to draw on. It also lets traders study patterns specific to the runway into an expiry date, for example, how quickly time value eroded in the final sessions, or how open interest concentrated at particular strikes as expiry approached, patterns that repeat structurally cycle after cycle even though the specific strikes and price levels differ.

One nuance to watch for is contract specification changes: lot sizes, strike intervals, and even the underlying index composition can change over time, so directly comparing absolute premium or open interest numbers across contracts expired years apart can be misleading without adjusting for those structural differences. Traders should treat expired contract data as most reliable for relative, pattern-based analysis within a consistent contract specification period rather than for precise cross-era numerical comparisons.
