The ratio of the number of stocks rising to the number of stocks falling on the exchange during a given session.
The advance-decline ratio (A/D ratio) is calculated by dividing the number of advancing stocks by the number of declining stocks on the NSE for a given day, or sometimes on an intraday rolling basis. A ratio above 1 means more stocks are rising than falling; a ratio well below 1 signals broad selling pressure even if the Nifty itself looks flat. It is one of the simplest ways to gauge market breadth without needing to track every individual stock.
Some traders extend this into a moving-average version, smoothing the daily ratio over 5 or 10 sessions to filter out single-day noise and see whether breadth is genuinely improving or deteriorating over a trend. This smoothed view is often read alongside the advance-decline line, which cumulates the daily net advances rather than just the ratio for a single day, giving a longer-term picture of participation.
In Indian F&O trading, the A/D ratio is mostly used as a confirming or contradicting signal rather than a standalone trade trigger. A trader holding Bank Nifty calls into an up-move, for example, might check whether banking stocks broadly are advancing or whether just one or two heavyweight banks are pulling the index — a diverging ratio can be an early hint of breadth divergence that argues for tighter risk management on the position.
One gotcha: unlike the put-call ratio, which is derived from options data, the A/D ratio is a pure cash-market statistic and says nothing directly about options positioning or implied volatility. Extreme readings — very high or very low ratios — are sometimes read as short-term overbought or oversold signals for the broader market, but many traders treat this as a rough contextual cue rather than a precise mechanical entry or exit rule.
