Net Greeks

The combined Delta, Theta, Gamma, and Vega exposure of every open position in a portfolio, summarising its overall risk sensitivity.

Net Greeks refer to the sum total of a portfolio’s option greeks across every open position, rather than looking at each trade’s greeks in isolation. If a trader holds a long call on Nifty and a short put on Bank Nifty at the same time, each position has its own delta, theta, gamma, and vega, and adding these figures together (weighted by lot size and position direction) gives the net figure that describes how the entire book behaves as a single unit.

Net delta shows the portfolio’s overall directional exposure, a net delta close to zero means the book is roughly market-neutral, while a large positive or negative net delta means the portfolio will gain or lose meaningfully as the underlying moves, similar to holding that many shares or futures lots outright. Net theta shows whether the book as a whole gains or loses value purely from the passage of time, and net vega shows how sensitive the combined position is to a rise or fall in implied volatility.

Active F&O traders and premium sellers monitor net greeks daily, often through their broker’s or a third-party analytics dashboard, to check whether their book has drifted from the risk profile they intended. A trader running several short option strategies might specifically want net theta to stay positive and net gamma to stay within a comfortable range, adjusting or hedging individual legs if the combined numbers move too far from target as the underlying shifts through the day.

A practical caveat is that summing greeks across different underlyings, say, Nifty options and Bank Nifty options together, assumes those instruments move in a fairly correlated way, which is usually true but not guaranteed. Net greeks also change continuously through the trading session as the underlying price, time to expiry, and implied volatility shift, so the figures are only a snapshot and need to be rechecked regularly rather than treated as fixed.
