You Cannot Watch the 9:15 Range on 180 Stocks at Once

The opening range breakout is a proven intraday setup. Running it by hand across every F&O stock, in the busiest hour of the day, is impossible.

Too many charts, too little time

Tracking the opening range high and low on 180-plus F&O names before 9:30 is beyond any single screen.

The clean breaks happen fast

By the time you spot a valid break on one chart, three others have already moved without you.

No quick way to check volume

A breakout without a volume surge is easy to fade, but confirming that manually mid-session slows you down.

Gap-and-go noise

Stocks that opened outside yesterday's range pollute your list with gap continuation, not true intraday breaks.

No way to test the rule set

You cannot tell whether a 15-minute range with a 2x volume filter actually has an edge without replaying past sessions.

Trended or reversed?

After the fact, it is hard to separate the breakouts that ran into the close from the ones that whipsawed.

What Is an Opening Range Breakout Screener?

The opening range is the highest high and lowest low a stock makes in a fixed window from 9:15 AM, commonly the first 5, 15, 30 or 60 minutes. It acts as a line in the sand for the rest of the session.

An opening range breakout screener scans every F&O stock for the moment price closes decisively above that high (a bullish break) or below that low (a bearish break), then ranks the results by how clean the break was.

Read the Intraday Guide
The range forms

A tight range points to coiled indecision. A wide range means much of the day's travel may already be done.

Price breaks it

The first candle to close beyond an edge is the signal. A break on rising volume that holds is the higher-quality one.

Volume confirms

Breakout candle volume divided by the average opening-range candle volume. Above 1.5 to 2 signals real participation.

It trends, or it does not

A close near the day's extreme means the move held. A close back in the middle means it reversed.

One Opening Range Breakout Screener for Every F&O Stock

Stolo tracks the opening range on the whole universe and hands you the breakouts that already pass your rules, live or on any past date.

Define the opening range your way

Pick the opening range length that fits your style and let the screener rebuild every range across the universe instantly.

  • OR duration of 5, 15, 30 or 60 minutes from 9:15 AM
  • Direction filter: bullish, bearish or both
  • OR width percent shown for every stock so you can skip ranges that are already too wide

Tighten the definition of a clean break

Layer on quality filters so tiny pokes through a level and low-volume fakeouts never reach your list.

  • Minimum move past the opening range edge
  • Breakout volume ratio, such as at least 2x the opening-range average
  • Maximum OR width and a breakout-before cut-off time
  • Exclude gap-and-go and an optional intrabar breakout switch

What Does an Opening Range Breakout Tell You?

Four states the screener helps you read once the opening range window has closed.

Bullish break

Close above the range high on volume

Price clears the opening range high by a clear margin with a volume ratio above 1.5 to 2. The market has resolved its early tug of war upward and often trends into the close. Traders look to enter near the range edge with a stop on the far side.

Bearish break

Close below the range low on volume

The first candle closes decisively under the opening range low with participation behind it. This is the mirror of the bullish case and tends to trend lower through the session. The range high or midpoint becomes the natural stop.

Low-quality break

Thin volume or a very wide range

Price nudges past the edge on a volume ratio near 1, or the opening range is already very wide as a percentage of price. These breaks are easy to fade and often snap back inside. Tighten the minimum-move and maximum-width filters to drop them.

Reversed session

Both edges broken, close mid-range

The stock broke one edge, failed, then broke the other, and the day-range position sits near 50. This is a whipsaw session for that name and a signal to stand aside or cut a position that is not working.

How to Use the Opening Range Breakout Screener

A repeatable morning workflow that turns the whole F&O universe into a short, ranked watchlist before 10:30.

Start Trial from ₹199
01

Open Screeners, then Opening Range Breakout

Log in to Stolo, open Screeners from the main menu, and choose the Opening Range Breakout screener. It loads with NIFTY 50 and a short range so the first results appear quickly.

02

Set range, direction and universe

Choose a 15-minute opening range as your starting point, set direction to both, and widen the universe to All F&O once you are ready for a fuller scan.

03

Add the two filters that matter most

Require a minimum move past the range so tiny pokes are ignored, and require a breakout volume ratio of 2 or more. These two do the most work in raising signal quality.

04

Exclude gap-and-go and set a cut-off time

Turn on Exclude gap-and-go to focus on ranges that formed and broke within the session, and set breakout-before to 10:30 or 11:00 so you are not entering late.

05

Read the table and open a detail panel

Scan breakout time, distance past the range, volume ratio and day-range position. Click a row to see the opening-range band, the breakout marker and the closing dot on one chart.

06

Backtest the rule set in history mode

Lock your filters, switch to history mode with the header date picker, and step through the last 20 to 30 sessions, totalling the EOD P&L column to get a rough read on the edge.

Opening Range Breakout vs Gap-and-Go vs a Plain Intraday Screener

Three approaches traders mix up. Here is what each one actually surfaces.

Opening range breakout

Range that built and released

A range that formed after 9:15 and then broke during today's trade, with volume and follow-through you can measure.

  • Precise breakout time and level
  • Volume ratio versus the range average
  • Day-range position to judge follow-through
Gap-and-go

Gap continuation, not a range

The stock opened well outside the previous day's range and simply kept running. There is no intraday range to break.

  • Driven by overnight news or flow
  • Excludable in the ORB screener with one switch
  • Different risk profile and stop placement
Plain intraday screener

Generic movers and volume

Top gainers, losers and unusual volume lists tell you what moved, but not whether a defined level was broken or when.

  • No opening range concept
  • No breakout timing or quality score
  • Useful for context, not for this setup

The Stolo edge: the opening range, breakout time, volume ratio and day-range position are computed directly from one-minute NSE data across every F&O stock, not approximated. Pair it with the market screener for broader context or support and resistance levels for confluence.

An opening range breakout screener is a tool that scans a whole universe of stocks for the moment price breaks out of the range it formed just after the market open. The opening range is the highest high and lowest low made in a fixed window from 9:15 AM, usually the first 5, 15, 30 or 60 minutes. The screener records the first candle that closes above that high as a bullish break and the first close below the low as a bearish break. It then ranks each result by how far past the edge price closed, how much volume was behind the move, and where the stock finished within its day range. On Stolo it runs across every F&O stock at once, live or on any past date.

A 5-minute opening range gives the earliest signals but carries the most noise and the most false breaks. A 15-minute opening range is the common middle ground and filters out much of the opening whipsaw, which is why most traders start there. A 30 or 60-minute range produces fewer, higher-quality signals, but you enter later and part of the day's move may already be done. The practical approach is to begin at 15 minutes, then test 5 and 30 in history mode on your own universe to see which fits your instruments and holding period.

After the opening range window closes, the screener watches each stock's one-minute candles. By default it records a breakout only when a candle closes beyond the range edge, which filters out most fakeouts. If you turn on the intrabar option it records the breakout the moment price touches beyond the edge, which is earlier but produces more false signals. The first qualifying break in each direction is the one it reports, along with the exact time, the distance past the range, and the volume on that candle.

Yes. Switch to history mode and pick a date from the header date picker. The screener recomputes the opening range and every breakout for that session and adds a simulated result for each match: enter at the range edge on the breakout and exit at the close. Lock your filters first, then step through twenty or thirty past sessions and total the EOD P&L column. That gives you a rough read on whether your exact rule set has an edge, though the simulated result is deliberately naive and ignores slippage, stops and intraday exits.

A gap-and-go is when a stock opens well outside the previous day's range and simply keeps running in that direction. The breakout in that case is really gap continuation driven by overnight news or flow, not a range that built and released within the session. Turn on Exclude gap-and-go to drop stocks whose open was already outside yesterday's high or low. That keeps your list focused on ranges that formed and broke during today's trade, which is the setup the ORB strategy is actually about.

It is the volume on the breakout candle divided by the average candle volume during the opening range. A ratio near 1 means the break happened on ordinary volume and is easy to fade. A ratio of 2 or more means real participation pushed price through the level, which is the kind of break that tends to follow through into the close. Filtering for a volume ratio above 1.5 or 2 is one of the single most effective quality checks you can apply in an intraday breakout screener.

It is a score from 0 to 100 for where the stock closed within its full high-to-low range for the day. On a bullish breakout you want this near 100, which means the stock held its gains into the close and the move trended. A reading near 50 or lower after a bullish break means the move faded or reversed. It is a fast way to separate the breakouts that ran from the breakouts that whipsawed, and it is especially useful when reviewing history mode results.

Yes. The Universe control offers All F&O, NIFTY 50, Bank and Financial. Choosing a smaller universe also makes the scan run noticeably faster. The screener loads by default on NIFTY 50 with a short range so the first result set appears quickly, and you widen from there. Traders who want index-aligned breakouts often set the universe to NIFTY 50 and take only breaks in the same direction as the index itself.

In live mode the opening range is not complete until its window ends. With a 15-minute opening range there is nothing to break until after 9:30, and the first breakouts usually appear a few minutes later once price has had time to move away from the range. If the table is empty just after the open, that is expected behaviour, not a fault. Give it time, or shorten the range to 5 minutes if you want earlier signals and can accept the extra noise.

The two most common choices are the opposite edge of the opening range, which is wider and gives the trade room to breathe, or the midpoint of the range, which is tighter but stops out more often. Some traders instead use the low of the breakout candle on a bullish break. The screener does not place or manage stops; it is a research tool. What it does is show you the exact range edges and the breakout level so you can size the position around your chosen stop before you execute through your broker.

The opening range, the breakout time, the volume ratio and the day-range position are all computed directly from one-minute NSE data and are reliable. The maximum favourable and maximum adverse excursion figures are currently approximated from the full-day range against the range edge rather than the true post-breakout extremes, so treat those two numbers as a guide rather than a precise reading. History scans are computed on demand and then cached. Columns and behaviour may change as the screener moves out of Beta.

The Opening Range Breakout screener is part of Stolo's Pro analysis access and can be tried on the Flexi Trial, which starts at ₹199. That lets you run live scans across the F&O universe and use history mode to test a rule set before committing. See the Stolo pricing page for the current tiers and what each one includes.
