Brokerage

The fee a broker charges for executing a buy or sell order, one of several costs that separate a trade's raw profit from its actual take-home.

Brokerage is the charge levied by a stockbroker for executing an order on the exchange on a trader’s behalf. Most Indian discount brokers catering to F&O traders charge a flat fee per executed order (rather than a percentage of trade value) for futures and options trades, while some charge nothing on the buy leg of intraday equity trades but do charge on F&O. Because options premiums are often small in absolute rupee terms and traders frequently take multiple legs in a single strategy, brokerage can be a meaningful drag on returns for high-frequency intraday and options traders even when the per-order fee looks small.

Brokerage is only one line item among several that a broker’s contract note lists for every trade. Alongside brokerage, a trader’s transaction cost includes STT, NSE exchange transaction charges, SEBI regulatory fees, stamp duty, and GST on brokerage. These charges apply independently of whether the trade was profitable, which is why a strategy that looks profitable on raw price movement can still lose money once every cost is accounted for.

For active options traders, brokerage adds up fast because strategies like straddles, strangles, and iron condors involve multiple simultaneous legs, and each leg, both the entry and the exit, is billed separately. A trader running four-legged strategies several times a day accumulates a meaningful brokerage bill by month-end, which is why scalpers and high-frequency intraday traders pay particular attention to their broker’s per-order pricing rather than assuming costs are negligible.

Ultimately brokerage, along with the other statutory charges, is what separates a trade’s raw price-movement profit from what actually lands in the trader’s account, the distinction commonly described as gross P&L vs net P&L. A trader who only tracks gross profit and ignores the accumulated cost of brokerage across dozens of trades a month is likely to overestimate real trading performance.
