SEBI Regulatory Fees

A small fee charged on traded turnover that funds the Securities and Exchange Board of India's oversight of the securities markets.

SEBI regulatory fees, sometimes called the SEBI turnover fee, are charges levied on trading turnover to fund the operations of the Securities and Exchange Board of India, the regulator responsible for overseeing exchanges, brokers, and market conduct in India. Every trade executed on NSE in the equity, futures, or options segment attracts this fee, which is collected by the exchange and broker on SEBI’s behalf and shown as a separate line on the contract note alongside NSE exchange transaction charges and STT.

Compared to brokerage or STT, the SEBI fee is typically the smallest individual charge on a contract note, calculated as a very small fraction of turnover. But like the other statutory charges, it applies uniformly to every executed trade regardless of profit or loss, so an active F&O trader taking many round-trip trades a month accumulates this cost across every single execution even though each individual charge looks negligible in isolation.

Because the fee funds market regulation rather than exchange infrastructure, it is set by SEBI notification and can change independently of NSE’s own exchange transaction charges, the two are structurally separate even though both appear as small turnover-based line items on the same contract note. Traders should treat the specific rate as something to check on their broker’s current tariff sheet rather than assume it is fixed indefinitely.

While individually small, SEBI fees are part of the same cost stack, alongside brokerage and GST on brokerage, that separates a strategy’s gross P&L vs net P&L. A trader evaluating strategy profitability over dozens of trades should account for the full stack rather than dismissing any single charge as too small to matter.
