Client Positioning

On NSE, “Client” is one of the official participant categories used in daily derivatives reporting, alongside FII, DII, and Pro. It broadly captures retail and other non-proprietary, non-institutional trading accounts routed through brokers — essentially, the aggregate footprint of individual traders and smaller entities across index futures, index options, stock futures, and stock options.

Because this category aggregates a huge number of individual retail participants, client positioning data is often studied as a contrarian indicator. When client accounts are heavily net long calls or net long futures at an extreme relative to their historical range, some traders view this as retail crowding into one side of the trade, a setup that has historically preceded sharp reversals when that crowd is forced to unwind, sometimes visible as sudden long unwinding or short covering soon after.

This data is published as part of the same daily participant-wise open interest reports that cover FII and DII activity, so traders typically read all categories together rather than client data alone — comparing whether Client positioning is aligned with or opposite to FII and Pro positioning gives a fuller sense of who is on which side of the market.

The main caution with client data is that it is a blunt, aggregated figure — it mixes disciplined systematic traders with impulsive intraday punters, and does not distinguish hedged positions from naked directional bets. Many experienced traders treat extreme client positioning as a mild contrarian caution flag rather than a precise reversal signal, and combine it with price action, India VIX, and breadth data before acting on it.
