The trading positions held by brokerage and institutional proprietary desks trading their own capital rather than client money.
“Pro” is the NSE participant category for proprietary trading desks — the in-house trading arms of brokerages and financial institutions that trade with the firm’s own capital rather than on behalf of clients or as an institutional asset manager. Pro desks are typically staffed by professional, often systematic or quant-driven traders, and their aggregate positioning is published daily alongside FII, DII, and Client data.
Because Pro desks often run market-making, arbitrage, and volatility-driven strategies rather than pure directional bets, their open interest changes can reflect activities like delta hedging option books, cash-futures arbitrage, or volatility strategies as much as they reflect a directional market view. This makes Pro data trickier to interpret than a simple long/short read — a large Pro short futures position, for example, might be a hedge against a long options book rather than a bearish bet on the index.
Retail traders following participant-wise open interest reports typically use Pro positioning as one data point among several — comparing how Pro desks are positioned relative to Client and FII flows can hint at whether the more sophisticated, often better-capitalized side of the market is leaning with or against the prevailing retail sentiment, particularly around high-open-interest weekly expiries on Nifty and Bank Nifty.
A key nuance is that Pro flows are frequently the most “noisy” from a pure directional-signal standpoint, precisely because so much of it is hedging and arbitrage rather than conviction trading. Many traders avoid reading Pro data as a standalone directional cue and instead use sharp, sustained shifts in Pro positioning as a prompt to dig deeper into what might be driving it, rather than as a trade trigger on its own.
