Distribution (Volume Pattern)

A volume pattern where heavy trading occurs at elevated price levels without further upside follow-through, often read as large holders selling into strength.

Distribution describes a specific volume signature: a stock or index trades at or near recent highs on unusually heavy cumulative volume, yet price fails to make meaningful further progress upward, often stalling or drifting sideways for several sessions despite the elevated activity. The pattern is named for what is presumed to be happening beneath the surface, larger participants gradually selling (‘distributing’) their holdings into demand from smaller buyers, rather than accumulating a fresh position.

On the NSE cash and F&O markets, distribution is typically spotted by comparing a rally’s early volume, which tends to be comparatively light as the move builds, against the volume seen once price approaches a prior high or a well-known resistance level. If that late-stage volume surge produces little to no further price gain, or the stock even closes weak on high volume days (sometimes visible as long upper wicks with heavy turnover), it is read as a caution sign rather than confirmation of strength.

Options traders extend this idea into open interest data: distribution at a resistance zone alongside rising call Change in OI at nearby out-of-the-money strikes can indicate writers are comfortable selling calls there, effectively betting the level holds. This is a case where reading price and volume patterns together with OI data, similar in spirit to Volume-OI Confluence, gives a fuller picture than volume alone.

Distribution is inherently a pattern-recognition call rather than a precise metric, and it can be mistaken for a normal consolidation before a continued rally, many apparent distribution phases resolve upward once fresh buying resumes. Traders who rely on it generally treat it as one input for tightening a stop-loss or trimming a position rather than as a standalone signal to go short.
