The alignment of rising traded volume with a matching change in open interest, used to confirm whether a price move reflects genuine new positioning.
Volume and open interest answer different questions: volume measures how much trading activity happened, while OI measures how many contracts remain outstanding afterward. Volume-OI Confluence is the practice of reading both together rather than in isolation, because a price move backed by both rising volume and rising OI is a materially stronger signal than the same move on volume alone, where contracts may simply be changing hands between existing holders without any net new positioning.
A classic confluence pattern on the NSE F&O segment is price rising alongside both a volume spike and a corresponding jump in OI at nearby strikes, consistent with a genuine long buildup rather than short-term churn. Conversely, price falling with high volume but flat or falling OI usually points to existing longs simply exiting (long unwinding), which behaves very differently from fresh short buildup, where falling price comes with both volume and OI rising together.
Traders typically build this view by cross-referencing Volume Gainers and OI Gainers lists side by side, or by checking a contract’s volume and change-in-OI figures directly on the option chain or futures watchlist. Strikes that show heavy volume without any OI confirmation are often flagged as noisy or speculative, whereas strikes showing confluence near an existing OI wall tend to be watched more closely as potential turning points.
The main limitation is that confluence describes agreement between two metrics, not direction or certainty by itself, it still needs to be read alongside price action and the broader trend. It works best as a filter to separate high-conviction moves from short-lived intraday noise, rather than as a standalone entry trigger.
