VWAP

The volume-weighted average price of a security over a trading session, used as an intraday benchmark for fair value and trade timing.

VWAP, or Volume-Weighted Average Price, is calculated by taking the cumulative value traded (price multiplied by volume at each tick) and dividing it by the cumulative volume traded, from the market open at 9:15am IST up to the current point in the session. Unlike a simple moving average, VWAP gives more weight to price levels where more volume actually changed hands, which is why institutions and active intraday traders treat it as a proxy for the “fair” average price the market has paid so far that day.

Intraday F&O traders on NSE commonly use VWAP as a reference line rather than a standalone signal. Price trading above VWAP is generally read as a sign that buyers are in control for the session, while price below VWAP suggests sellers have the upper hand; many traders will only take long call option trades or futures longs when Nifty or Bank Nifty is holding above VWAP, and flip to puts or shorts when price is sustained below it. Because VWAP resets fresh at the start of each session, it is purely an intraday tool and carries no meaning across multiple days.

VWAP is also widely used as a dynamic support or resistance reference during the day, similar in spirit to other support and resistance zones, and as a benchmark for execution quality on large orders, a big buy order filled below VWAP, or a big sell filled above it, is generally considered a good execution. Some traders combine VWAP with volume spikes or with signals like gap up and gap down opens to decide whether the day’s move is likely to sustain or fade.

The main limitation is that VWAP can give misleading signals in low-volume, choppy sessions or during the opening minutes when very little cumulative volume has built up, making the line unstable. It is also a lagging, backward-looking calculation, so it describes where the average trade has happened, not where price is necessarily headed next; traders typically pair it with price structure or momentum tools like Supertrend rather than relying on it in isolation.
