Supertrend

In short

A trend-following indicator built on average true range that plots a dynamic line to signal buy or sell zones on a chart.

Supertrend is a technical overlay indicator that plots a single line above or below the price candles, calculated using Average True Range (ATR) and a multiplier, typically with default settings like a 10-period ATR and a multiplier of 3, though these are adjustable. When price closes above the Supertrend line, the line flips below price and turns green, signalling an uptrend; when price closes below it, the line flips above price and turns red, signalling a downtrend. Each flip is commonly treated as a fresh buy or sell signal.

Because it is built on ATR, Supertrend automatically adapts its distance from price based on how volatile the underlying is, widening during volatile phases like results season or an RBI policy day and tightening during calmer, range-bound stretches. This makes it popular among intraday and short-term F&O traders on Nifty and Bank Nifty futures, who use the line itself as a trailing stop-loss level, exiting or reversing a position when price closes on the other side of the line rather than waiting for a fixed target or a fixed loss amount.

Traders frequently combine Supertrend with other tools to filter out weak signals: checking whether price is also above or below VWAP, or confirming a flip with a volume spike, before actually entering a trade. Because it is a lagging trend indicator, Supertrend performs well in sustained trending moves but tends to whipsaw, generating repeated false flips in quick succession, during sideways, choppy sessions, which is a common complaint among traders who apply it blindly on every timeframe.

A practical nuance is that Supertrend signals differ meaningfully across timeframes and parameter settings, so a 5-minute chart and a daily chart on the same stock can show opposite signals at the same moment; disciplined traders typically fix one timeframe and parameter set for a given strategy and backtest it rather than switching settings after losing trades. It is also worth remembering that Supertrend is a general-purpose technical indicator, not specific to options, so it says nothing directly about implied volatility or time decay affecting an options position built around the same signal.
