A color-coded visual grid showing which stocks or sectors are gaining or losing, and by how much, at a glance.
A market heatmap displays stocks (often sized by market capitalization) as colored tiles — typically green shades for gainers and red shades for losers, with intensity reflecting the magnitude of the move. It is a fast way to visually scan the entire NSE market or a specific index like the Nifty 50 or Nifty 500 without scrolling through a long table of tickers, and is one of the quickest ways to eyeball market breadth and emerging sector rotation in a single glance.
Because tiles are usually grouped by sector, a heatmap makes it easy to spot whether a market move is concentrated — for instance, all-green banking tiles alongside all-red IT tiles — versus genuinely broad-based, where green and red are more evenly and randomly distributed. This visual grouping is often faster to interpret intraday than computing an exact advance-decline ratio, even though both are measuring related things.
Indian retail F&O traders commonly use heatmaps at market open (9:15 AM IST) and through the session as a quick pulse check before deciding which index or sector to focus options activity on that day, and to spot which individual large-cap stocks are unusually strong or weak relative to their sector — often cross-referenced with volume gainers or OI gainers lists to see if the price move is backed by real activity.
The main limitation is that a heatmap is a snapshot, not a trend indicator — it tells you what has already happened up to that moment, not what will happen next, and tile size/color conventions vary across platforms, so traders should confirm which weighting (market cap, index weight, or free float) a given heatmap is using before drawing conclusions from it.
