The observed tendency of an underlying's price to drift toward its calculated max pain strike as expiry approaches, especially in the final trading hours.
While Max Pain is a calculation, the specific strike that minimises payouts to option buyers, the Max Pain Gravity Effect is the behavioural pattern traders observe when price actually moves toward that strike as the clock runs down on expiry date. The ‘gravity’ framing captures the idea that price is pulled toward the strike rather than pinned exactly at it; it is a directional bias in the final hours of trading, not a promise of an exact settlement level.
The mechanical driver behind this drift is largely delta hedging by large option writers and market makers. As the underlying nears a strike with heavy open interest, writers who are short calls or puts at that strike need to rebalance their hedges continuously; on expiry day, with gamma rising sharply near the money, even small underlying moves force disproportionately large hedge adjustments. These flows, repeated across thousands of contracts on liquid names like Nifty and Bank Nifty, can nudge price back toward the strike that requires the least net hedging pressure, which often coincides with the max pain strike.
Indian retail traders who watch this effect typically do so only in the last couple of hours before the weekly expiry close, since the pull is weakest early in the week when positions are still being built or adjusted. It is materially weaker, or absent entirely, on days with a strong news catalyst, high India VIX, or heavy FII/DII directional flow, since those forces can easily overwhelm the hedging-driven drift. Traders should treat it as a probabilistic tailwind on quiet expiry days rather than a trading strategy on its own, and it is worth reading alongside the closely related, broader phenomenon of Option Pinning.
