Trending Volume: Option Strikes Seeing Volume Bursts
Trending volume in Stolo ranks option strikes by which are seeing sudden bursts of traded volume. It cuts the chain down to the strikes where the activity is right now, so you can see where liquidity is building and treat a price move backed by a volume burst at the right strike as the higher-conviction one.
The problem it solves
Most strikes on the chain barely trade in any given window. The one or two that suddenly light up are where the market's attention has gone, and finding them by scanning volume figures row by row is slow. Trending volume ranks them for you and updates as the session runs, so you catch the burst while it matters.
The concept
- Volume concentrates on decisions. When the market forms a view, trading clusters on specific strikes.
- A burst is a signal of attention, not direction. Direction comes from pairing the burst with price and OI.
- Liquidity follows volume. The trending strikes are the ones with the tightest spreads right now, which matters for your fill.
- Sustained beats spiky. A strike that trends for several intervals reflects a real theme; a single-bucket spike can be one large order.
Key terms explained
| Term | What it means |
|---|---|
| Volume burst | A sharp rise in traded volume at a strike over a short window. |
| Trending strike | A strike ranked near the top for volume over the chosen interval. |
| Churn | High volume with little OI change, contracts changing hands between existing holders. |
| Unusual activity | Volume far above a strike's normal pace. |
| Interval | The window the volume burst is measured and ranked over. |
A worked example
BANKNIFTY is at 48,100, quiet mid-session. You open Trending Volume with a 3-minute interval.
- The 48,500 CE jumps to the top: volume in the last three minutes is roughly six times its earlier pace.
- Price ticks up to 48,180. Open interest at 48,500 CE is also rising.
The read: a burst of call buying has hit a strike well above price, and OI confirms it is fresh. Someone is positioning for a move toward 48,500. A momentum trader takes a long near 48,150 targeting 48,500, and notes that the 48,500 CE is now liquid enough to trade cleanly if they want the option rather than the future.
How to use it in Stolo
- Open Analysis, then Options, then Trending Volume.
- Choose the instrument and expiry.
- Set the time interval for the ranking.
- Read the top trending strikes and check each against price direction and open interest.
- Use the strike selector to limit the scan to your band.
- Load a past date to see which strikes drew volume before a previous move.
Pair trending volume with trending OI. A strike trending on both, with OI rising, is fresh conviction. A strike trending on volume alone with flat OI is churn and less meaningful.
How traders use it
- Liquidity check. Trade the strikes that are active now for tighter spreads and easier fills.
- Conviction filter. A breakout with a matching volume burst at a sensible strike is worth more than one without.
- Attention radar. The trending list is where you first notice the market has decided something.
- Seller's read. Sellers see which strike the crowd is most willing to trade against them and price the risk accordingly.
Live mode and history mode
Live mode re-ranks the strikes through the session as volume comes in. History mode rebuilds the ranking for a past date, so you can study which strikes the market crowded into before a previous move.
